The future exploration of the Red planet is about to change considerably: ESA and NASA have agreed to joint programs, starting with missions planned for 2016 and 2018. One of the main objectives continues to be the search for liquid water and also to understand the origins of methane discovered by ESA’s Mars Express orbiter and other ground-based observatories five years ago. And underlying these two elements is… the quest for signs of life, past or present on Mars. The world’s experts on the subject recently met in Italy and Martian methane still remains an enigma, as featured in this special report produced for ESA-Television.

With great pleasure, I’ve been working again on the Rosetta mission. For two reasons: ESA’s comet chaser will be skimming past Earth on 13 November for its last planetary flyby, and science teams held a workshop in Rome to prepare for next years big event, the flyby in July of the Lutetia asteroid. This ESA-Television video provided a preview of both events.
